El amante liberal – Miguel de Cervantes

English:

El amante liberal is part of a series of novels written by Miguel de Cervantes called the novelas ejemplares.  These short stories speak to the contemporary problems of Spanish society during the Golden Age.  Ricardo, the protagonist, is captured by Turkish pirates along with the women he loves, Leonisa.  Through fate, Ricardo and Leonisa are united in captivity, but eventually attain freedom and return home to marry.

The themes of this story are often cited as references to Cervante’s own life, especially the idea of captivity.  While serving in the military, Cervantes was captured and held as a slave for 5 years in Algiers.  Eventually, he was ransomed and released by his parents, and although he never wrote anything strictly autobiographical about the experience, it would forever influence his work.
